Are You Getting Enough Calcium?

        This surprised us: Calcium is the most abundant mineral found in the human body. About 99% of the calcium in your body is stored in your bones and teeth. It's what keeps your bones and teeth strong. For healthy hair and strong nails, you'll also need adequate calcium.

        The final 1% circulates through your body in the blood and soft tissues (such as your organs). This small bit of calcium helps your muscles, nerves, and blood function correctly.

        Whenever you take in calcium through your diet (by eating calcium-rich foods or taking a calcium supplement), you ensure your body has enough 'circulating calcium' to work properly.

Now, What Happens When You Don't Have
Enough Circulating Calcium?

        Think of your bones and teeth as a 'bank' of calcium. If you don't have enough calcium circulating in your blood and soft tissues, your body 'makes withdrawals' from on your reserves of calcium in your bones and teeth to make up the shortfall.

        Over time, if you keep eating a calcium-deficient diet, your body is going to be like a poorly-managed bank account -- your bones and teeth won't have enough calcium, and they'll become weak and brittle.

        That's when you can develop osteoporosis, which literally means that your bones are 'porous,' or hollow. A simple fall can lead to a broken hip, or worse.

        You may be thinking that you're getting enough calcium in your diet. After all, like us, you may try to eat a balanced diet, and include calcium-rich foods like dairy products.

That's Why Accurate Information on Calcium Is So Important...

        The numbers are surprising: According to federal health statistics, 90% of women, 70% of men, and 60% of teenagers don't get enough calcium in their diets.

        Research shows that, on average, our diets provide only about half of the calcium that is currently recommended by the National Institutes of Health.

        According to federal statistics, adults should consume at least 1,000mg of calcium every day (that's the U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance). Adults over 50 should consume at least 1,200mg. Postmenopausal women and adults over 65 need at least 1,500mg. Pregnant women, women who are nursing, and young adults (11 to 24), should get at least 1,200 to 1,500mg. And children under eleven need 800 to 1,200mg.

        So, for example, the information on calcium above says that if you're a woman between 19 and 50, and you're not pregnant, you need the equivalent of just under four 8-ounce glasses of milk a day... every day. That's a lot of milk or dairy products! (And that assumes that you can absorb all the calcium -- a very big assumption.)

        Even if, based on the information on calcium above, you meet the federal recommended daily intake for calcium, you can still be shortchanging your bones and your health. The calcium you eat only helps you if it's absorbed properly by your body.
